VICTORIA, Monday August 13th, 2018 – It is with great pride that the Organizing Committee for the 2020 Canadian Francophone Games (CFGames) announces that Victoria City Council voted in favor of a financial contribution of $50,000 for the CFGames.
The eighth edition of the CFGames, featuring more than 1,000 young people from every Canadian province and territory, will take place in venues throughout Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich and Victoria, July 14 to 18, 2020.
“It is very exciting for the City of Victoria to be supporting the Canadian Francophone Games,” said City of Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps. “We are thrilled to have the CFGames in our community and look forward to having the young delegates gather here in the summer of 2020.”
“We are thrilled with this support from the City of Victoria and thank the City for its financial commitment,” said Marie-Pierre Lavoie, Chair of the Victoria 2020 Canadian Francophone Games Organizing Committee. “The enthusiasm from local governments and organizations is gradually building. The CFGames will need support from all government levels as well as from many local businesses and organizations as we prepare our plans to deliver a memorable Games experience in 2020.”
The Organizing Committee has also secured financial commitments from the Government of Canada (Canadian Heritage), the District of Oak Bay and the Société francophone de Victoria.
The 2020 CFGames will take place in 700 days. Organizations and individuals interested in collaborating with the event as partners or volunteers should contact the Organizing Committee as soon as possible. The Organizing Committee will be looking for more than 500 volunteers to help stage the CFGames.
The Victoria 2020 Canadian Francophone Games Organizing Committee is tasked with delivering the CFGames to contribute to the sociocultural development and identity building of young Canadians aged 14 to 18 who speak French. During the CFGGames, those young Canadians will take part in more than 70 events in 13 disciplines in art, leadership and sports. The events include: visual arts, public speaking, track and field and volleyball. Culinary arts and sailing will also be part of the program during the 2020 CFGames as demonstration disciplines.
The CFGames are a major cultural event to showcase the Greater Victoria area. Tourism and economic revenues from hosting this event is estimated to generate up to $4 million from 2018 to 2020 in direct investment, with even more indirect tourism revenues in the four communities hosting the CFGames.
